Watched movie #157 White Christmas from 1954. Two performers, along with a sister act, put on a show in a vermont resort, in order to help support their retired army general, who now runs the resort. This is a classic Christmas musical that I watch every Christmas, and this was the first time I was able to see it on the big screen. If you have never seen this movie, you may find it a little cheesie, but it is still fun today. The song White Christmas is still one of the biggest Christmas songs of all time and has been recorded by numerous singers. The song was first released in the movie Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, and became a big hit, so Paramount decided to re-release it with its own movie, that was original supposed to star Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, but Fred was not able to do it, and eventually Danny Kaye got the part. Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen played the Haynes Sisters. Vera Ellen was a dancer, not a singer, so her singing was done by Trudy Stevens, but one thing I learned today, was that Rosemary Clooney sang both parts of the song Sisters in the movie. Another funny thing, in the movie the sisters are talking about their brother who has been working in Alaska and Rosemary Clooney said he has been been out of the country while working in Alaska. The movie was made in 1954, and Alaska didn’t become a state until 1959, which is why he was out of the country. If you are looking for a fun sappy Christmas musical from the 50s, with some fun songs, then I would checkout White Christmas. It will be playing on TV in the next few days.
