My adventure with Moviepass has ended. I can’t believe it’s been a year since I found out about Moviepass from my Niece and purchesed a year of movies. For those who don’t know about Moviepass, it was a service that I joined, where I paid 1 year in advance at 7.95 a month, which was supposed to let me see one movie a day for 365 days. It started out as watch any movie as long is it was not a 3D or IMAX, or special event, like a Fathom Event movies. So on March 16, 2018 my quest to see 365 movies in a year on Moviepass had begun. I was dedicated to reach my goal, I went to the movies every night when I was camping at Doheny Beach for Easter week, I went to the movies on Mother’s day after hosting a party and dinner at my house, and I even went to a movie on the 4th of july. For the first 5 months, it was a dream come true. I was able to go see any movie at almost all of the theaters near me everyday, and I was also able to see the same movie more than once, until day 44, when Avengers Infinity War came out. Moviepass made a change that you can only see a movie once. This was the first change they made, but I was OK with that, as I wanted to see as many different movies as I could. By this time everyone was thinking, is Moviepass too good to be true, and how will they sustain their business. I had figured that if it was, at least I have seen enough movies to make back my money. Moviepass continued to work and I was on my way to watching 365 movies until July 30th, day #138, all of the non-e ticketing theaters were blocked, and I had seen all of the movies available to the e ticketing theaters, so it was my first day to not see a movie in 138 days. The next day, July 31, again there were no movies available. I saw a couple available in the morning, but by noon they were gone, and since most theaters don’t open their box office until 11, I was missing another day. My pass started working again after that, and then one day Moviepass ran out of Money, but I was able to purchase a ticket that day. Moviepass then made another change to only allow 3 movies a month. That was a big change, but they told me that I could still do 1 a day until my renewal date, which would be March 16, so I was OK, Until I tried to see movie # 4 for the month and they had changed me to 3 a month anyways. By this time, you could not call them, you could only text them in their app. I asked them why I was changed even though they told me I wouldn’t be changed, and the response was the only thing in life that is guaranteed is change. Not good response when I have prepaid a year. They offered to let me cancel and they would refund me the remaining amount, but by this time they have made several changes, that I did not believe they would give me any money back, and even at 3 movies a month, I would be able to see more movies then I could purchase with the refund money, so I decided to stay with them. They then made another change, where you could only select a movie from 6 movies each day that they allow you to see, unless you go to an e ticketing theater and then you can see any movie. That was OK as the theater near me was e ticketing, and there was also one at triangle square in Costa Mesa. Then one day, all of my e ticketing theaters disappeared, apparently moviepass did not pay them, so they all pulled out. So I had to select a movie from there list of 6 movies. Most of the movies on their list were either independent movies, or it might be a major release, but after it had been out for a few weeks. This made it harder to see even 3 movies in a month. Around Christmas time, movies were only available until 9 am then then they were no longer available, which made it impossible to see any movie. In January I was only able to see 2 movies, 1 in February, and 2 in March. My one year was up on March 16th, and I did not renew, but in total I saw 165 movies, not bad, but not the 365 I was originally offered. Overall, I enjoyed my Moviepass experience, it was a dream come true at first, and it got me out of the house everyday, and I went to about 11 different theaters and saw many different movies that I probably would never had gone to see. I saw foreign language films including the first Indian Space movie Tik Tik Tik, independent films, Old Retro Films and major releases. It was great being able to see 165 movies and I enjoyed going everyday while it lasted. Will I signup with Moviepass again, probably not, as I don’t trust them, but never say never. I’m thinking of joining AMC’s pass, which is 3 movies a week, but I guess I need to get a job first. It was also fun posting a picture each day and giving a quick review of the movies, now if I could only get a job where I can watch a movie every day, that would be perfect.
